CD Review - Robot Rock(Joy Electric) |
Joy Electric- Robot Rock
This was Joy Electric's debut album on the BEC Recordings label. The band had a addition from their last release (Old Wives Tales EP), his name was Jeff Cloud. Most people knew Jeff as the bass player from the band Starflyer 59, he was not one you would think of as a synth pop star. The band decided to change a little, by being a synthesizer-only band. They no longer used samplers, drum machines, or any other traditional instruments. This made for a sound that was totally new to the Christian scene.
By this time the band had already released 2 full lengths and 2 EPs on Tooth and Nail Records, therefore they had a quite large audience for a synth pop act. Most people were used to the simple progressions of their earlier work, but Robot Rock changed all of that. With two synthesizer players they were open for much more than when Ronnie was alone. The result was an album filled with complex songs that were very layered.
Few people have actually heard Joy Electric, and if you haven't the best way to explain it is to hear it. It is electric music with very pop-influenced vocals. If you are a fan of such secular bands as Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys, or Erasure you will find Joy Electric to be amazing.
If you liked any other Joy Electric releases this should be a nice album for you. Speaking for myself, I have 7 of their albums and this is my favorite. Is short, this was an amazing synth pop album. If you go for that kind of stuff give this album a spin in your CD player...
Overall score: 10
